Sushi, Sumo, and Scrummaging: My Adventures in Japanese Rugby

Hello from Japan! It’s Freddie Burns, here to share some insights and laughs from my time in the Land of the Rising Sun. Japan has been a whirlwind of new experiences, both on and off the rugby field, and I can’t wait to dive into all the details with you.

Rugby in Japan is like nothing else. The pace is electric, the tactics are sharp, and every match is a masterclass in precision. But it’s the spirit of the teams here that really stands out—they play with a heart and discipline that’s both inspiring and challenging. The style is very technical; they focus intensely on skills and speed, making every second on the pitch count.

Living in Japan has opened my eyes to a whole new world. The people here are incredibly welcoming, and their respect for tradition and innovation is visible everywhere you go. From ancient temples nestled in bustling cities to cutting-edge technology making everyday life smoother, the blend of old and new is fascinating.

Let’s talk food—Japanese cuisine is a game-changer. Whether it’s your first sushi roll or your hundredth bowl of ramen, each meal is a discovery. The flavors are fresh, the presentation is always impeccable, and let’s not forget about Japanese barbecue—absolutely a must-try!

Culturally, Japan has taught me so much about the value of respect and the beauty of simplicity. Participating in local customs like tea ceremonies, where every movement is thoughtful and every detail matters, has shown me a new way to look at the world. And yes, I’ve tried my hand at sumo wrestling; it’s harder than any gym session I’ve ever done!

In short, Japan has not only changed the way I play rugby; it’s changed the way I see life. It’s about harmony, respect, and above all, embracing the moment. Whether it’s under the bright lights of Tokyo or in the serene countryside, Japan has a piece of my heart.
